Mountain Top Removal Delegation
"From the
Hollar to the Hood"
Two members of 8th Day Center for Justice staff, Erin Cox and Stephanie
Dernek were part of a delegation to West Virginia to visit with
communities in the struggle to stop Mountain Top Removal Coal
Mining. The delegation was organized by Eco-Justice Collaborative
and included folks from Climate Justice Chicago (a coalition that 8th
Day is engaged with in the Chicago area).
The
goal was to solidify connections between the source of coal, the
extraction end with the combustion end. The links were very
strong between the communities that are bearing the brunt of the of the
destruction both in West Virginia and in Chicago's Pilsen and Little
Village Neighborhoods (where Chicago's two Coal Fired Power Plants are
located. We hope to build on this momentum to shut down
Chicago's Coal Plants and all new coal plants, busting the myth that
there is no such thing as "Clean Coal".
