DEBT  CANCELLATION

As we recently observed World AIDS Day, we might be interested to know
that 70% of the 8,000 people who die from HIV/AIDS every day are in Africa. 
At the same time, most African countries spend more on debt payments than
on health care.  In the world’s poorest countries, majorities do not have adequate
housing, basic health care or clean water, while their leaders pay debt service
to wealthy nations and institutions. Debt costs lives.

2007 is the Sabbath Year, seven years after Jubilee 2000 campaign to “Break
the Chains of Debt” brought the issue of crushing international debt to our
awareness.  As part of Sabbath Year 2007, Jubilee USA Network is calling on
congress to pass the Jubilee Act H.R.2634 and S.2166.

This legislation will improve lending behavior and expand debt cancellation, a
proven means of fighting poverty, to all the impoverished countries that need
it to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.  Jubilee USA Network
is calling on Members of Congress to support improved creditor behavior and
debt cancellation in impoverished countries by co-sponsoring the Jubilee Act.
