On Monday, January 27, the leaders of the weapons inspection team in Iraq will, most likely,
report to the UN Security Council that while Iraq must be more cooperative, the inspectors need
more time to do their job. The US will oppose this position.

By mid-February, the US will be poised for all out war against Iraq.  On top of 12 years of
sanctions and almost daily bombings in the “no fly zones,” the results of this pending preemptive
strike will be cataclysmic for the people of Iraq, the region of the Middle East, and the world
community, as many aid agencies and commentators have indicated.  Clearly, Iraq is just one
step in the US government’s effort to restructure international relations and secure control of the
oil fields from the Middle East to the Caspian region.

Thankfully, France, Russia, China and Germany stand with millions across the world in
opposing this war. France, which acts as president of the SC in January, threatens to veto any
effort to approve war. Germany, which will be SC president in February, stands solidly with
France. (Russia and China also hold veto power, along with the US and Great Britain.)

These last few days, the US has exerted enormous pressure on the Security Council to accede to
its demands for a war resolution.  Nine of the 15 members must vote yes for any resolution to
pass, assuming none of the permanent members veto the resolution.  Every effort must be made
to bolster council members to say No! to war.

ACTION
Write/call the following delegations to the UN to encourage their opposition to US efforts for
war. Tell them how, as a US citizen, you have worked to keep our nation from escalating
economic and military warfare on Iraq. Tell them that now you ask them to do all in their power
to keep the US from carrying out its war plan against the Iraqi people.
